Some accessories come down to preference, but every vehicle owner needs a basic kit. Start with microfiber towels, enough so that you have a different towel for each surface, two brushes for wheels and interior vents, applicator pads for wax and ceramic coatings, a bucket with a grit guard so dirt drops out of the wash water instead of riding back onto paint, and a reach and clean tool for interior glass. Add to your collection as you find new tools and accessories your setup is missing.

Clear coat, soft plastics, and wheel finishes should not be treated the same as kitchen counters. Cotton bath towels drag grit across paint and leave fine scratches, and stiff household brushes scratch delicate surfaces on trim and interior panels. Professional-grade detailing accessories are matched to specific surfaces and controlled pressure, so you can clean without causing additional damage.

Wash microfiber cloths separately from cotton, because cotton lint packs into the fibers and ruins absorbency. Also, skip fabric softener entirely, since it coats the fibers and turns a good towel into one that smears. Otherwise, keep it simple, wash your microfiber cloths in warm water, low heat, or air dry, no bleach. Retire a towel once the edges fray or the pile mats down flat.

Water spots are minerals left behind when droplets dry on the surface instead of coming off while cleaning. The fix is reducing the time water is allowed to evaporate on your paint.
