Exterior Car Care FAQ
A car wash removes surface dirt and road grime so your vehicle looks clean. Exterior detailing goes further. It includes decontamination, paint correction for swirl marks and light scratches, and a layer of protection like a ceramic coating or spray wax that guards painted surfaces against UV rays and the elements. Think of a car wash as maintenance and exterior car detailing as a full reset for your vehicle's appearance. We differentiate the two in detail in Car Washing vs. Car Detailing.
Bug guts are acidic, and the longer they bake on a hot panel the more they etch into the clear coat, so the fix is to get them off early rather than scrub them off late. Never go at them dry. That drags the residue across the paint and leaves scratches. Spray Bug Eraser directly on the bumper, hood, or mirrors, give it 30 seconds to break the residue down, and wipe it away with a clean microfiber towel. For splatter that has been sitting since your last road trip, Tarminator dissolves the bond between the contaminant and the paint. Our full guide on cleaning bugs from your car covers the tools that work, the DIY hacks that will cost you a clear coat, and how to keep bugs from sticking in the first place.
Every two weeks is a good baseline for most drivers on how often you should wash your car. If your car sits under trees, near construction, or picks up road salt in the winter, bump that up to weekly and consider a deep cleaning after each season change. Regular washing prevents contaminants like brake dust, bird droppings, and road grime from bonding to the paint, which protects your clear coat and helps maintain your vehicle's resale value over time.
A ceramic coating provides a longer-lasting layer of protection than traditional wax, typically several months to a couple of years depending on the product and how the car is maintained. It creates a hydrophobic surface that repels water, dirt, and UV rays, which means less buildup between washes and a finish that stays cleaner longer. Wax still has its place for a quick boost of gloss, but a ceramic coating cuts down on how often you need to reapply protection.
Swirl marks usually come from dirty wash mitts, dry wiping, or using the wrong towels. Start with a thorough rinse for dust removal before you touch the paint. Use the two-bucket method (one for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt) so you are not dragging grit back across the surface. When drying, use a clean microfiber towel and pat or blot in order to prevent swirl marks.
